A system on a chip (SoC) is essentially just that. It is an integrated circuit where all of the components that make up an electronic system are unified into one single chip substrate.

Usually they have low power consumption and lower cost. Also due to having less parts they are usually more reliable. This makes them suitable for embedded systems and mobile electronics.

A typical SoC will consist of the following:

  • CPU
  • Memory
  • Timing source
  • External interface
  • Power management
